Myths about testosterone harm for women. Myth 2: Voice changes during menopause and the influence of androgens
During menopause, women's levels of sex hormones decrease, which contributes to reduced tone of the vocal cords and the development of atrophic processes. This can lead to voice changes, which are more often seen in people who have placed heavy loads on their vocal cords throughout life: lecturers, singers, etc.
Such voice change is sometimes called “postmenopausal voice syndrome”.Its manifestations:drynessvocal fatiguehoarsenessloss of voice intensitya narrower registera lowering of the register
Women receiving androgen supplements at a therapeutic dose usually have no problems with voice changes.
However, if voice changes occurred in postmenopause before androgens were used, or testosterone was prescribed at a dose above the average therapeutic dose, voice changes can still occur — especially a lowering of the fundamental frequency.
Although stopping hormonal therapy may lead to some improvement, voice changes may remain.
Patients receiving androgen supplements should be informed about such side effects, which are most often irreversible.
Do not prescribe androgens (testosterone) on your own. Consult a doctor.
